How Does COVID affect the Heart?

Covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, can affect the heart in several ways. Some people with Covid-19 may develop inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis) or the lining around the heart (pericarditis), which can lead to heart failure or other complications. In severe cases, Covid-19 can also cause blood clots to form in the heart, which can increase the risk of heart attack or stroke.

In addition, people with underlying heart conditions, such as coronary artery disease or hypertension, may be at higher risk for severe illness or complications from Covid-19.

It is important to take steps to protect yourself from Covid-19, such as wearing a mask, washing your hands frequently, and practicing physical distancing. If you have an underlying heart condition, it is especially important to follow the recommended precautions and to continue managing your condition as directed by your healthcare provider.
