What is Myocarditis?

Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle. It can be caused by a viral infection, such as the flu or the common cold, or by other factors, such as an autoimmune disorder or certain medications.

Symptoms of myocarditis can include chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, and an irregular heartbeat. In severe cases, myocarditis can lead to heart failure, arrhythmias, or death.

Myocarditis is typically diagnosed using a combination of tests, such as a physical exam, electrocardiogram (ECG), echocardiogram, and blood tests. Treatment for myocarditis may include medications to reduce inflammation, such as corticosteroids, and to treat the underlying cause of the inflammation, such as antiviral medications. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary.

It is important to seek medical attention if you are experiencing symptoms that may be caused by myocarditis, as early treatment can help improve outcomes and reduce the risk of serious complications.
