What is a AAA (Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm)?
AAA, or abdominal aortic aneurysm, is a condition in which the aorta, the main artery that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body, becomes enlarged or swollen. The aorta runs through the abdomen and an aneurysm that occurs in this area is called an abdominal aortic aneurysm.
AAA is a serious condition that can be life-threatening if it is not treated. The risk of an AAA rupturing, or bursting, increases as the aneurysm grows larger. A ruptured AAA can cause severe internal bleeding and can be fatal.
AAA is most commonly diagnosed with a test called an ultrasound, which uses sound waves to create images of the aorta. Other tests that may be used to diagnose AAA include a CT scan, an MRI, and an angiogram.
Treatment for AAA may include medications to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of aneurysm rupture, as well as surgery to repair or replace the damaged portion of the aorta. It is important to seek medical attention if you are experiencing symptoms that may be caused by AAA, such as abdominal pain or a pulsating feeling in the abdomen.
